BRIEf HISTORY OF ICAN ABUJA & DISTRICT SOCIETY
Our History
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) was established by the Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1965 to set standards and to regulate the practice of accountancy profession in Nigeria. Since inception, it has trained over 52,000 Chartered Accountants and 18,000 Accounting Technicians who are engaged in various walks of life in the economy.
The Institute currently has a student population of over 300,000 in both the Professional and Accounting Technicians’ Schemes in addition to the 58 Districts Societies with the recent inauguration of Oyo and Ogbomosho districts established all over the country to bring the gospel of Accountancy and Professionalism. Besides its manpower development programmes, the Institute regularly submits memoranda on economic and business issues to the government which are often acknowledged as useful to policy formulation initiatives.
A major factor responsible for the remarkable progress, the Institute has made over the years is its organizational structure, which has President of the Institute as Chairman of the Council.
This organizational structure has earned the Institute a hitch-free annual succession plan which is the centre of attraction to other professional bodies.
The Abuja and District Society was inaugurated on of September 1991 with Pioneer membership of (8) Eight, these include Chief S.O. Ogundare FCA, AIh. Nasiru Ozamah FCA, Mrs. Ene FCA, T.O. Shorunke FCA, Mr. Bello FCA, Mrs. Bose F .Ikhanoba FCA, Rev. F.A. Oshiyemi FCA and Mrs B.C. Nwosu FCA. Today the membership strength had grown to over 2,500.
The district territory at the inception covered Abuja to Nasarawa, Lokoja, Minna and Bida in Niger State and later they were Inaugurated as District Societies.
The institute acknowledges the pivotal role of the Abuja and District being at the Federal Capital Territory. The Abuja District is one of the very effective and busy districts by virtue of its closeness to the seat of power and therefore assist the mother Institute to bridge the gap between it, the legislators and Executives. Abuja District has been known for leading the way in all activities of the Institute as we annually host the Institute’s president during the Annual Accountants’ Conference. Our Bye Law was adopted by the Institute for all the districts spread all over Nigeria, UK, United States, Canada and Cameroun.
